Circling the Sun Book Cover

Circling the Sun
by Paula McClain

The luscious writing of this novel will transport you to the dry rolling hills of Kenya and quench your thirst after a long drought. It is an exquisite story of Beryl Markham who grew up on the plains of Africa to become a legendary 1st woman horse trainer and later, a pilot. It's her path to self discovery through the disastrous relationships and love entanglements that define whom she became. A wild and adventurous spirit, much like the horses she worked to tame.

This novel effortlessly conjured up the familiar magic of my childhood favorites — it was like reaching for a sweater and finding my old worn favorite pushed into my hands. I'm going to wear it gleefully for a week, no matter the weather. This concludes my garment simile.

Dead Wake Book Cover

Dead Wake
by Eric Larson

Packed full of detail but details that for me made this book such a worthwhile read. I was surprised by the information I gained by reading Dead Wake. Published to coincide with the 100th Anniversary in May of this great Maritime tragedy I think this book will inform a whole new generation about a tragedy about an important event in History.

The Glass Sentence Cover

The Glass Sentence
by S.E. Grove

A brilliant book for any age! Imagine a world where one day everything stops, freezes like some pressed paused. Then, all at once time and space break apart: the 17th century is now next to the Jurasic period and Austrialla is sent into the future. Living among them is a spunky girl who finds herself on a quest to save her dad by reading a series of maps, but these are no ordinary maps. This has to be one of my favorite books--well written, enveloping and just fun.

Pirate Hunters Book Cover

Pirate Hunters
by Rober Kurson

What an enjoyable and fascinating book! I didn't know a lot about marine divers and hunters before this book but I feel like I walked away having learned a lot about the industry. The book did a great job of mixing the history of Joseph Bannister, who became a pirate in the Golden Age, with the true events of two men searching for his ship The Golden Fleece. They did an incredible amount of research to uncover the battle that went down and the potential areas the ship could have sank in. You don't usually hear a lot about pirate discoveries and searches but it definitely kept me enthralled.

Fallen Land by Taylor Brown Cover

Fallen Land
by Taylor Brown

Brown writes beautiful, almost lyrical and very descriptive prose. It's my favorite book of the years so far! You cannot help but fall in love with Callum and Ava, their horse Reiver, and even the surroundings. Set amid the war-ridden lands during the Civil War, Callum has a bounty put upon his head after rescuing Ava from a lesser fate. They flee, being hunted down. Everywhere they turn there is danger, destruction, starvation, and death. A perfect debut for Taylor Brown!
